Learn How to Make a Box Card

September is filled with birthdays for out family so since this is the first year having my Cricut Maker, everyone gets a handmade card. Since I made a box card for my husband last June, I’ve been planning a box full of candles for 2 of my grand kids that will turn 14 this year. 14 candles pop out of the box card! The flaps and sides are decorated with different birthday themed cut outs. They look hard, but are actually easy to make. Let me show you how to make a box card!

This post probably contains affiliated links. My full disclosure policy is boring, but you can find it HERE.

Gather Supplies For The Box Card

It’s amazing how little you need to make these guys. So gather your goods and we’ll get started.

Materials

Card stock
Tacky glue
Spray Adhesive
Double-sided tape
Cricut Maker or Explorer

First Attempt At The Box Card

I am very proud of my first attempt at the birthday box card. It’s cute, but as I looked at it, just not what I envisioned. Jacob will be thrilled with it none the less. Thinking I could certainly do better, I tried print and cut and the results are a little more professional looking I think. Obviously, I prefer the print and cut candles is much better. In short, I always find fault with my own work…

Time To Start The Box Card

First you will need to cut the box and embellishment pieces and print and cut the candles. Get the free design here.
Second fold all the scored  lines on the box. For the cross pieces, bend the flaps opposite of each other. Third separate the candles according to size and glue the 2 largest candles to the back piece of the box.

Start with the back cross piece and glue 3 candles how you like them being careful of the right hand side one that it doesn’t stick out too far for the envelope. I used a small puddle of glue to dip the end of the candles and pressed them firmly wiping all excess glue. be a little sparing with the glue as a little goes a long way!
Fourth glue all the cross pieces to the box, butting the edges right up next to each other. Glue 3 candles to each cross piece staggering them best you can. Let them sit and dry for a while.
Finally dot glue on the cross piece tabs being careful they are all fold in the same direction. Also run a small line of glue down the side for the box flap that needs to be folded to the inside. Fold the box flap under so it attaches when pressed down. Fold the box in half and press firmly wiping any excess glue.

Decorate the Flaps and Sides

I found my embellishments in Design Space. Get them here or use your own ideas by adding them to the box card design once you’ve saved your copy. To change the name Jacob on the one flap to the name of your choice, select the design,  detach and ungroup the image.  Double click on Jacob and the typing box should appear. Backspace Jacob out and type yours into the box.

Once again select the entire image, group and attach to ensure the design cuts properly. The ’14’ in the stars can be changed the same way.
Once you have the embellishments cut out spray the backs with spray adhesive and attach them to your flaps and sides of the box card.

The Envelope

Simply fold all the score lines and place a piece of double-sided tape on the flap as shown in the photo and press it into place. Place the tape as close to the edge of the flap as possible. If you plan to mail the card, use a piece to secure the closing flap. Lastly, press firmly to secure.

So there you go! You can decorate the box card with whatever you wish. Christmas, Halloween, the sky is the limit! With just a little bit of time, cardstock and glue your Cricut cutting machine will crank one of these sweet babies you for you in no time! What are you going to do with yours?
