What is a Mug Rug?
So basically the mug rug is a small quilt. They can vary in size from square to rectangular shapes. You choose whatever you think is good for yours. They can be just 2 equal size pieces of fabric or you can piece the top together for a little more flair. If you have an embroidery machine, you can use that to make your top. The possibility are endless. I’m going to show you different ways to make one of these for yourself. You can use the Cricut Maker to cut your pieces making this project super easy! Let’s Get Started!

I like to put contact paper on my fabric mat therefore getting more use out of it. After pressing all wrinkles from the piece of fabric, press it onto the mat. I tape across the top for extra precaution to keep it from moving during the cutting process. My photo is of the set of 4 cutting.
Once you have the design on the mat in Design Space, press make it and cut your fabric pieces. However, I suggest cutting the batting by hand to save the mess on the cutting mat. Learn more about The Truth about Cutting Fabric with a Cricut Maker here.
Cricut Maker Cuts Perfectly!
So it’s time to start sewing the small pieces together. Begin first by laying the pattern out with them.
After that, begin sewing them first two together and then the third one.
Continue until all 4 rows are complete.
MiniPress is Good for Sewing Projects
Using the MiniPress, I like to press both pieces of fabric to one side then alternate sides on the next row the opposite way. My way of getting good corner. Most importantly, they come out perfect practically every time!
Now pin them together. You will feel with your fingers when the two seams lay perfect together. Sew the seam to join the two rows. Press this seam open. After that, add the next row of squares and then the last row.
This is perfect! All the corners meet exactly! Be sure to press thoroughly.
Join the 2 Pieces
Sew the left and right piece together. Press the seam open.
Alright, place the top And bottom right sides together. Place the batting on top of them and sew them all together leaving a gap big enough to turn the mug rug right side out.
Time to clip the corners and trim some of the batting from the seams.
No Binding, Super Easy
Turn the piece right side out and poke the corners out so they are nice and sharp.
Use an invisible hand hit stitch to close the gap.
Apply the Star to the Mug Rug
Once the gap is sewn closed, it time to do the star. First, clip approximately 1/4” into the star.
Next, fold and press one side of a point. Clip the end.
Repeat on the other side and clip the excess at the point again.
Continue until the whole star is done. Press well.
Mug Rug with Cricut Maker Almost Finished
Center the star in the solid part of the mug rug and pin in place. Then stitch close to the edge all the way around the star through all layers of fabric.
Now top stitch 1/8” around the outside of the mug rug. Start at the middle and once back to the starting place, turn and stitch in the ditch the center seam.
Finish by stitch in each seam of the checkerboard side. Remember to lock your stitched in place with a few back stitches each time.
